On May 22, Lazard's Chief Executive Officer, Peter Orszag, appeared on CNBC's Squawk Box where he discussed tailwinds propelling M&A activities, the maturation of debt issued during the global pandemic, and the current sentiment among executives about the regulatory framework for dealmaking.
Peter highlighted an interesting shift in corporate behavior towards regulatory restrictions in dealmaking: "I think that the fact the Government has lost some cases…means that the deterrence effect now is probably smaller than it was two years ago, even though it's much higher than it was five years ago. Many boards and C-suites are willing to litigate, knowing the laws have not changed and they're being interpreted in a new way."
